
Diabetes during pregnancy is termed as gestational diabetes. Your blood sugar will be very high in this condition. Excess glucose in your blood can be harmful to both the mother and child.
- 8 out of 100 pregnant women can develop diabetes. However, it can be managed through a healthy lifestyle. Eat leafy foods and avoid sugar-rich foods; do light exercises and consult your doctor regularly.
- Chances of developing gestational diabetes are higher if you are overweight or you are hereditarily inclined to this condition. Hence keep your weight under check.
- Research has shown that people who had gestational diabetes during previous pregnancy, will have higher chances of it in next pregnancy as well.
- Among the risks, a very important fact is that it might even affect the child later on. Your child may have tendency to develop obesity both in the teenage years and youth.
- Women could be at risk of contracting preeclampsia during gestational diabetes. Preeclampsia is characterised by complication of high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system. Side effects such as swelling in feet, legs, fingers and high blood pressure, stroke, or seizures are of higher possibilities in this condition.
For a healthy pregnancy, strict control of gestational diabetes is mandatory throughout the nine months of pregnancy with the help of diet, exercise, medicines (if necessary).
